Welcome to Lakeview Action Coalition

Merger Updates

LAC is considering merging with Organization of the NorthEast. Please read our blog for updates and discussion about the process: https://oneandlac.wordpress.com/.

SRO Campaign Coverage

The last SRO tenants at the Abbott Hotel at 721 W. Belmont were vacated on April 5th because of an order from the Chicago Fire Department due to the unsafe conditions in the building. BJB Properties, the new owner of this SRO, started doing rehab in the building with tenants still legally living there. The owner had shut off heat and water for weeks before this vacate order. These are among many of the tactics owners use to kick tenants out in order to move forward with their plan to gut rehab the building. LAC is working to preserve the Abbott to be an affordable SRO. Read recent coverage of our SRO preservation work.

The Lakeview Action Coalition (LAC) is a non-profit, multi-issue community organization. The Coalition is comprised of 49 institutional members, including religious congregations, non-profit agencies, banks, business associations, a credit union and a senior citizens caucus. These diverse institutions are stakeholders in the Chicago communities of Lakeview, Lincoln Park and North Center.

LAC enables its members to act on their values in public life by participating in the decisions that shape our community's future. We fulfill this mission by organizing people around issues affecting our members and by developing leaders through training, action and reflection. Since our founding in 1993, we have fought for justice, solidarity and diversity.

LAC is funded by its member institutions, foundations and other donors and by earned income. Members pay substantial dues in order to provide local, independent funding.

Recognizing that Lakeview is part of a larger city and region, LAC was a founding member of United Power for Action and Justice in 1997, a coalition of organizations across metropolitan Chicago. In 2009, LAC affiliated with National People's Action, a coalition of grassroots organizations across the country. In 2012, we signed on to a national campaign with Americans for Tax Fairness.
